Installation Fails with "Installation Package Could Not Be Opened"


Explains how to troubleshoot an "Installation Package Could Not Be Opened" condition.


During installation of software that uses Windows Installer (MSI) technology, a message "This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package." usually indicates an incomplete or corrupt installation file.

If the software was downloaded, it should be re-downloaded. The best method to verify that the downloaded file is complete, is to check its digital signature.

Adblockers and low-quality antivirus programs are a main cause of blocked and damaged downloads. If the issue persists after a re-download, consider disabling any antimalware tools other than the most reputable ones (e.g. Windows Defender, Kaspersky, etc.)

If the software was downloaded from an e-commerce provider, a limited number of initial downloads may be available. If this number is not sufficient to complete a successful download, contact the e-commerce provider to have the number be reset or increased. Contact information is usually listed in the purchase confirmation email.
